Urges Unfettered
I have long thought of the Devil card as representing two things: lies and bondage. Lady Harris’ not so subtle rendering has prompted further consideration.
The goat goes around consuming whatever he finds, screwing whatever he can and laying his horns to whatever gets in his way. Finders keepers, losers weepers. He takes. He fucks. He fights.
He lies, because it is easy, and it helps him to get what he wants.
It may be difficult for some of us to look on this behavior in the abstract without judgment. In the “real world” though, we often admire, exalt and reward such characters. We elect some of them to the highest offices in the land. We afford others of them great wealth and power in exchange for bargains on consumer goods and free two-day shipping. We construct elaborate ideologies to justify and encourage their continued abuses of our planet, our class, our souls.
Without the survival of the fittest, we might be less fit. Surely, though, we have evolved sufficiently that we can continue to grow and thrive as a species in a more thoughtful way. Must we continue to glorify and reward brutality and avarice?
Tell the truth and shame the Devil.
